Lou the Frog Princess Inked.

Wish I had time to make this post interesting, but here's a teaser panel of my comic.

Once I had the thumbs, I drew the panels is nonphoto blue (which I couldn't scan because it's way too light). I drew on cold press illustration board because I'm planning on watercoloring over it. I used Hunts 102 and hunts 108 crow quill nibs to ink it up. The 102's for the long shots for less line variation and the 108's for close ups because that have TONS of give to get fat lines. Also, the only ink that I use is Doc Marten's Archival ink because it's seriously the only one that doesn't run when water is introduced. I sound like an advertisement, but I thought some people might be interested.

Sleep Deprivitization.

When I don't sleep, I do drawings like this:





But when I don't sleep it's usually for things that are really sweet. So this week was because I'm graduating and working on tests for a job at a REAL BONAFIDE CARTOON STUDIO (yipeeeeeee). So no worries dudes, I'm cool.

Passes at a Princess...

Judging by the title, it seems this post would be about my trip to Disneyland but alas, it's merely a couple inked passes at the princess for my comic.

It's like I'm always doing this super simplified for animation style because I've gotta crank out 6 billion drawings when I'm supposed to be reading for my Personal Finance class. So now that I'm stepping (read: falling) into comics I thought I'd mix it up. Searching a bit with how I'm gonna play out the women.





Just some inking tests to get used to the final style.





Up next is finalizing my woman design and then color comping (which I'll do digitally and then just mimick the colors traditionally when I pull the final watercolors).

Comic Continued.

Since I've got my road map of where I'm headed, I get to play a little bit. I'm messing around with how cartoony I'd like the princess to be. Just trying to think of funnier poses and stuff for certain panels. Mainly trying to establish the feel that I want for the panels. This part is fun.

Lou the Frog Comic.

I'm doing a take on the Frog Princess with my character Lou the Frog (before Disney can release theirs and sue me for all that I have... 23 dollars and 34 cents). I'm gonna start posting my process up here, so check back once in a while you sinners.

After I got my concept down, I start by thumbnailing my idea out on post it notes (smaller the better). These are those 1.5x"2" ones. My good pal Eric Bryan handed this idea down to me. The advantages to using small post-its are:
1) the smaller the more focused on the BROADER composition you'll be, rather than details
2) you won't be attached to your drawings which makes editting and redrawing easier
3) you can easily arrange and rearrange them on your page as you edit your story

Notice all that I really care about at this stage is clarity in composition and staging. Making the drawings funny will come later. So after I've got my basics down and I know where I'm going, I start doing character sketches. I haven't gotten too far with this, but here's a shot at the princess.
